Whether African American, White or Bi-Racial, There is Truly a Reborn for Every Family
True Beauty
At first, I didn't understand the appeal of reborn baby dolls. Then I saw and held some at an exhibition and finally understood the fascination. I couldn't tear myself away from them, once I had held-no cradled- one in my hands. These are exquisite works of art, appealing to men, women and children alike. Many people sometimes think the most beautiful of all of the Reborns are the African American reborn baby dolls. They are just as lifelike as any other Reborn, making them a perfect addition for truly any family imaginable.

How It's Done: Creating the Magic
How do they do it? How do these artists take an ordinary vinyl baby doll kit, which comes complete with arms and legs, torso and head-all the in pieces in one box, and then have the capability of turning the pieces of the kit into a lifelike model of an actual infant? While there are many websites and videos showing how it's done, the real magic comes from the talented artists who make it happen. The Artists use special paint, glue, sealant and glass, doeskin, and real hair, taking time and love to create subtle details. They make beautiful reborn baby dolls -- newborns, older infants, preemies and sometimes even toddlers -- of every race, nationality and shade. I saw beautiful dark-skinned and light-skinned African American Reborn Dolls, along with Caucasian, Asian, Native American, and mixed-race, or Bi-racial, dolls.

A Life Mimicked Is A Life Created
These reborn baby dolls were so lifelike I could scarcely believe it. Their skin was soft, seemingly transparent. Some had eyes open, some closed. There were boys and girls. Some of them were actually warm to the touch. They smelled like babies -- soap, baby powder, a hint of milk. When you lift one, you almost instinctively try supporting its head, the way one does with real infants. I did just that and then, I saw a grandmother and a teenage boy nearby doing the same thing.
I saw immediately that these wonderful dolls would appeal to many people, for many reasons. The teenage boy told me his sister had been so devastated after a stillbirth that the family had taken pictures of the dead child and was having an African American reborn baby doll made in its exact image, so that she could hold and talk to it and feel she was communicating with her baby. The women putting on the exhibition said that reborn dolls are also good for women who can't have children, and in nursing homes, where elderly people enjoy caring for them. They would also be good as practice babies for young people in health and parenting classes, much better than a flour sack.

Collectors Only?
Some Reborn Doll artists say that their creations are not for children to play with, but I think they would be ideal. There is at least one artist who makes some of their reborn doll creations specifically for children to love and enjoy too.Just as Barbie dolls come in all colors, the Reborn Doll collection is no different. Children of all races need dolls that look like them, as it helps them get a sense of identity, why should an African American child have to try to relate to a Caucasian doll? Some psychologists think trying to force something like that on a child can be mentally devastating, and I have to agree. That is why most artists who create the Reborn Collection offer dolls of all nationalities and races, including African American, Hispanic, Asian, even bi-racial or mixed race dolls. African American children would love these dolls and they should have a chance to have a beautifully crafted, lifelike African American Reborn doll all their own.
